I’ll never forget the day because for weeks beforehand the media talked about how July 7, 2007 was supposed to be such a lucky day, thanks to the triple 7’s.

My sister called me at my parents’ house in Myrtle Beach—when she opened the front door of my house that morning, it was raining through the ceiling from the second floor.

Turns out, a tiny two-inch piece of rubber had sprung off a tube inside a second floor toilet and had been unleashing a steady stream of water for four straight days.

Walls, ceilings, carpet, furniture, hardwood floors throughout the entire house were ruined. The flooding had even stained the hardiplank siding and concrete base outside the house. In the end, damages totaled more than $42,000. (Thankfully, I had good homeowners insurance!)
